The Penang Youth Park also known as Penang Municipal park is a recreational park that’s located about 6km from Georgetown. Visitors enter the park through Persiaran Kuari to reach the park area which is open 7 days a week from 6:00am onwards. Prior to being developed as a recreation park, Youth Park was a quarry back in the 70s. It was then converted into a park when the quarry was de-commissioned. Today, the park houses a skating ring, outdoor auditorium, a large field for football and children’s playground.
Back in the early 70s, Penangites would gather at the park for friendly games of football as the large field can accomodate at least two matches simultaneously. Children enjoy their time at the skating ring under the cool shade provided by the many trees in the park while parents can enjoy a nice cup of coffee at the nearby café. There’s an archery training ground behind the park where the locals train martial arts as well.
In recent years, as the park received more funds, it has been upgraded with more facilities. The entrance was rebuilt to offer a warm welcome to visitors, more plants were added to the landscape and a full fledged skate boarding area was built to complement the existing skating ring.
Visitors who wish to have a foot massage can walk barefoot along the reflexology path which was constructed from river stones. There are also two pools available for adults and kids alike to enjoy a nice cool dip in the water. For the intellectuals who wish to play a game of chess can enjoy a life size chess set. Also not to be missed are the various exercise machines that were added around the park.
The best part is that it is free to enter and everyone can enjoy the facilities at their leisure. We do hope that visitors will do their part in ensuring the cleanliness of the park as well as refrain from vandalizing the facilities provided.
